New CND report highlights Trident has nowhere to go

Ministry of Defence and CND are in agreement: Trident has nowhere to go

Sunday, 29 January 2012

TridentsubIf Scotland becomes independent in 2014, Trident will have nowhere to go.

This is the verdict from within the Ministry of Defence (MoD). It is also the conclusion of CND’s detailed report, based on government archives, into potential alternative sites for Trident.

Read the report here: Trident: Nowhere to Go

An MoD source has confirmed that “there simply isn’t anywhere else where we can do what we do at Coulport [nuclear weapons storage], and without that, there is no deterrent.” [1]

CND’s report analyses the MoD’s own archives from 1963 which considered sites for the Polaris nuclear weapons system. Documents which provided evidence for discounting potential locations are now being dusted off by the MoD in a frantic search for an alternative location to Trident’s current home, Faslane and Coulport in Scotland. [2]

With options including a 2012 Olympic sailing venue, National Trust land and densely populated areas, “Trident is at a dead end”, said Kate Hudson, CND General Secretary.

“Trident is at a dead end, strategically and economically. Now we can add ‘geographically’ to the list too, as MoD sources have confirmed CND’s analysis: there ‘simply isn’t anywhere else’ for Trident to go.

The expenses incurred in replacing Trident are already snowballing. The additional costs and the difficulty of relocating Trident from Scotland should once and for all lay to rest any plans for Britain to waste well in excess of £100bn on a Cold War weapons system.

The MoD refuse to relate this enormous white elephant in their budget to the fact that they’ve just announced a further 3,000 personnel cuts: bringing the total so far to 58,000 job losses in the defence sector. Trident is not just a monstrous weapons system – it’s a job killer.

Given the serious concerns already raised over the strategic necessity of Britain retaining a nuclear weapons system, this should be the final nail in the coffin for Trident. The Government’s own National Security Strategy downgraded the risk of state-on-state nuclear attack to a Tier Two threat. Senior military figures say it’s useless. So why are we spending vast sums on it? At a time of the biggest public sector cuts in British history, the facts now speak for themselves: Trident has nowhere to go.”

Arthur West, Chair of Scottish CND, stated that “Scotland could make a major contribution to nuclear disarmament with international implications. Over the years nuclear weapons have been imposed on Scotland but now we have an opportunity to make a difference and to put an end to Weapons of Mass Destruction in Britain.”

Germany pledges end to Nuclear Power by 2022
germannuclearpowerstationThe German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that all nuclear power stations will be shutdown in Germany by 2022.

Germany has committed to providing for its energy reserves with the use of renewable energy sources. The policy shift comes in reaction to concerns over safety in the light of the Fukushima disaster and presuure from large anti-nuclear protests throughout the country.

In the UK the coalition government has launched a review into nuclear power safety, though so far they seem to be sticking with the policy of opening a new generation of nuclear power stations.

Menwith Hill: A US Spy Base in Yorkshire March 1st

Lifting the Lid on Menwith Hill:
The Strategic Roles and Economic Impact of the US Spy Base in Yorkshire

Thursday 1st March 2012
 7.30pm
 Harrogate Friends Meeting House
12a Queens Parade Harrogate

This is the first report of its kind that investigates the role of Menwith Hill since the European Parliament resolved that the electronic surveillance breached the European Convention of Human Rights in 2001.

It sheds light on the work of the US base which is run by the National Security Agency (NSA) under an informal and secretive lease agreement with the UK Government. Important questions are raised within the report regarding the base's accountability to Parliament.

The report covers:
  • Menwith Hill's strategic role as a regional intelligence base illegally collecting and analysing information from satellites, phone tapping and the interception of internet traffic
  • The role that Menwith Hill plays in information-led warfare for US military actions such as drone attacks
  • An examiniation of claims made by the US authorities, and repeated in Parliament, of the economic benefit of the base to the local community
  • The hidden economic costs of the base and the degree to which these are subsidised by the UK taxpayer

The launch will include a presentation by the report author Dr Steve Schofield and a discussion on the main findings.

Further information on Menwith Hill can be found on our campaigns pages.

Doomsday clock moves a minute closer to midnight

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) today expressed concern at the news that the Doomsday Clock has been moved a minute closer to Midnight. The symbolic clock now reads five minutes to midnight: a response to inadequate progress on nuclear weapons reduction and climate change.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, responsible for maintaining the clock, stated: 'Two years ago, it appeared that world leaders might address the truly global threats that we face. In many cases, that trend has not continued or been reversed.' [1]

CND General Secretary, Kate Hudson, has described the move as 'a painful reflection of the faltering progress on nuclear disarmament.'

'In 2010, there was a surge of optimism following President Obama's high-profile commitment to global nuclear arms reduction and the signing of the New START Treaty. This led to the Doomsday Clock being moved back by one minute, to six minutes to midnight.

'Yesterday's move, however, is a painful reflection of the faltering progress on nuclear disarmament. The US's continued insistence on its so-called Missile ‘Defence’ programme is derailing further disarmament talks as Russia feels under threat.

'The US is seeking to develop a "shield" to protect against incoming missiles, thereby enabling it to attack other countries without fear of retaliation. In doing so, the US is not only making a mockery of its commitment to disarmament negotiations, but it is provoking a new nuclear arms race. Russia has, in response, announced plans to develop a new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile, capable of breaching the US system.

'In addition to these worrying developments, the UK's commitments as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) have taken a back seat since the positive rhetoric of 2010, when William Hague stated, following the NPT Review Conference, that the UK pushed for the Conference to 'strengthen implementation of the Treaty's non-proliferation and disarmament provisions'.  [2]

'CND welcomed this statement, but the UK is now ploughing ahead with replacing its own Trident nuclear weapons system. 2012 will see the NPT Preparatory Committee held in Vienna in May. If the UK Government and the international community are serious about disarmament, then bold steps must be taken towards credible, practical and binding treaties on nuclear arms reductions. Otherwise the Doomsday Clock will continue to chart our inexcusable failings, until the midnight bell tolls without anyone left to hear it.'
