In a message dated 29/01/03 11:14:09 GMT Standard Time, writes

"Fylingdales, although a British base operated by the RAF, is one of four US Ballistic Missile Early Warning System stations."

We believe this statement to be the first official announcement that RAF Fylingdales is a US Base, not a supposed joint-command NATO facility.

The following reveals how the UK Ministry of Defence lied to the North York Moors National Park Authority:

The Planning Application for the installation of the current RAF Fylingdales radar pyramid was made by the UK Ministry of Defence in 1986 and consultations were carried out between the North York Moors Chief Planning Officer, D C Statham, and the Ministry of Defence. Arising from the consultation, M J D Fuller, Head of PL(Defence Lands), Ministry of Defence, Chessington, Surrey KT9 2LU, wrote on 25 September 1986:

Dear Mr Statham,

RAF FYLINGDALES

We promised to write to you on three points you raised at Friday's presentation of our proposals for modernisation of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning (BMEWS) at RAF Fylingdales...

... Finally you asked for further information on why the modernised system could not be located at an alternative site outside the National Park. First, as the Notice of Proposed development makes clear, the Ministry of Defence is not intending to build an entirely new facility, but to modernise an existing one. Although the modernisation programme will be far-reaching, involving the installation of modern radar equipment followed by the dismantling of the present aerial domes, this work will be carried out on the existing site, enabling the modernised system to use most of the infrastructure at RAF Fylingdales...

The original Planning Application and consultation documents are held on file at the North York Moors National Park Plannign Office, Helmsley, North Yorkshire.

We await your response.

Anne Lee
