Yorkshire CND confronts the major nuclear issues of relevance to the world, the UK and the region head on.

We are one of the UK's leading organisations campaigning against Menwith Hill and have organised major demonstrations, conferences and events in Yorkshire and the UK.

The two key UK bases necessary for missile defence are both located in Yorkshire (Menwith Hill near Harrogate and Fylingdales near Whitby). Yorkshire CND has built up a wealth of knowledge and expertise on the subject and has produced a variety of campaign resources and briefings on the subject.

As well as campaigning regionally, Yorkshire CND works closely with the National CND office on the campaign against missile defence and the weaponisation of space. Representatives of Yorkshire CND have spoken on missile defence and space issues on the national and international stage including conferences in Geneva, Brussels and San Francisco. Working with local groups and NGOs we campaign to raise awareness of the threats posed to Yorkshire, the UK and to international stability by missile defence and the ongoing push towards weapons in space.

We are part of the growing global movement working to make the world nuclear free. Nuclear weapons have not gone away. Although there has been much progress, there are still tens of thousands of nuclear warheads in the world, with a combined destructive power of a million Hiroshima bombs. The United States, China and Russia are keen to develop newer nuclear weapons that are easier to use, and other states, including North Korea, are keen to join the nuclear club.

Britain has its own nuclear arsenal - Trident - and is showing no signs of living up to its legal commitment under international law to scrap it. Every day the UK breaks the law by their mere ownership of these devastating weapons - and they spend £1.5 billion a year keeping it going. Yorkshire CND campaigns to raise awareness of Trident, lobbying and organising local events as well as taking supporters to the regular demonstrations at the Faslane nuclear submarine base.

Yorkshire CND has and will campaign against any nuclear testing by any state and opposes the development of new, smaller nuclear weapons. We raise awareness of nuclear proliferation and ask supporters to take action on increases in the nuclear arsenals of states.

Yorkshire CND works with other groups in the region to actively campaign against the war on terrorism.. We will always take a role campaigning against unjust and illegal wars that touch on the issues of WMD or nuclear weapons. Weapons of mass destruction breed weapons of mass destruction. Only through peaceful, multi-lateral initiatives and disarmament can we hope to achieve stability, security and disarmament.

As part of the nation-wide Nukewatch network, we monitor and track the secret nuclear warhead convoys which travel regularly through Yorkshire on the A1. A nuclear convoy accident could spread deadly radioactive material for miles, poisening a huge area for thousands of years. We provide information on peace and nuclear issues to the region's media, MPs and MEPs, teachers and students and to anyone else interested.

We campaign in many ways: lobbying, public speaking, organising demonstrations and stunts, leafletting, letter writing and through non-violent direct action. Our campaigns are entirely peaceful and we aim to educate, raise awareness and influence. In all our campaigns we aim to persuade through the strength of our arguments, through effective action and through non-violent protest. Our vision is of a safer, saner world with real security for all - free of the threat of nuclear accident or war.

The only real alternative is nuclear disarmament - join the worldwide campaign for a nuclear weapon free world!
