Why we oppose US M.D.?US Missile Defence makes us an immediate target from states targetting the US. A state wishing to attack the US may send intercontinental ballistic missiles to take out a radar station such as Fylingdales to lessen the chances of retaliation.The system is designed solely to protect the US from missile attack yet missiles would most likely be intercepted over Europe. If these were nuclear armed, the consequences would be catastrophic. Missile Defence stands in the way of nuclear arms reduction talks between Russia and the US. While the US continues to push on with the system and place bases on Russia’s borders, Russia will feel threatened and are likely to be unwilling to reduce their nuclear war heads. There is concern that future developments will lead to weapons being placed in space. US research and development programs are investigating other possible components such as space based missiles. The system threatens to start a new arms race. Other states including Russia and China feel threatened by US Missile Defence. This could lead other countries increasing their stockpiles of weapons and developing technologies that could outwit or overwhelm missile defence systems and/or develop their own missile defence system (leading others to follow a nuclear weapons spiral).
