How it WorksThe system uses a network of space based heat detecting satellites detecting global ballistic missile launches. A ground and space based network of radars track and target incoming missiles. The US can then launch its own missile to intercept (shoot down) the enemy missile. It is not clear how well the system works. The US government have claimed successful tests but since 2002 the results have often been classified. It is important to remember that intercepting an intercontinental ballistic missile is like hitting a bullet with another bullet.
