About Yorkshire CND
menwith-hill-radomesRAF Menwith Hill
Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament actively works against the development, testing and use of nuclear weapons across the globe.

We are one of the UK's leading organisations campaigning against the US Missile Defence programme and organise major demonstrations, conferences and events in Yorkshire and across Britain.

Yorkshire CND works closely with National CND on the campaign against US Missile Defence and the weaponisation of space, providing extensive research and analysis about the development of the US Missile Defence programme and the role of bases such as Menwith Hill and Fylingdales. Yorkshire CND campaigns non-violently against any nuclear testing by any state and oppose the development of any new, nuclear weapons.

Our campaigns are entirely peaceful and we aim to educate, raise awareness and influence. In all our campaigns we aim to persuade through the strength of our arguments, through effective action and through non-violent protest.

Our vision is of a safer, saner world with real security for all - free of the threat of nuclear accident or war.

Missile Defence

US Missile Defence is part of US' strategy for full military domination of land, air, sea, space and information. The US describes it as a defensive system as it allows the US to shoot down incoming missiles.

Thursday

Yesterday the United States released for the first time newly declassified details about its nuclear stockpile. As of September 30, they had 5,113 nuclear weapons which, officials stated, represents a 75% reduction from the 22,217 that the US had when the Berlin Wall fell in late 1989. Although the figure includes warheads that are operationally deployed, kept in active reserve and held in inactive storage - the Pentagon admits that it does not include "several thousand" warheads that are now retired and awaiting dismantlement.

When Secretary of State Hillary Clinton addressed the NPT Conference she told the U.N. assembly that these numbers “send a clear, unmistakable message” and a senior defense official expressed hope that it would set a standard for the rest of the world, including China, to be more transparent about their nuclear weapons programs. She also said that the US nuclear weapons stationed throughout Europe as part of the NATO nuclear force will remain there for some time.

Lord Mandleson has announced that a new Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre will be based at Catcliffe near Doncaster.  The government plans to bring together university research and industrial expertise to develop manufacturing techniques for the nuclear power industry.  It will be led by the University of Sheffield in partnership with the University of Manchester and it is expected to be up and running by the end of 2011.  The government are supplying £15 million and Yorkshire Forward will support the project with a further £10 million.
